Highton wins GBR Division 1 Premiership

The Game that was one with good bowls and thoughtful game play.

Conventional wisdom in bowls says that if you win more Ends than you lose then you'll invariably win the game. This principle was tested during the 2017/18 Grand Final between Highton and Ocean Grove.

With one of the focus of Bowls development this season being on the Clangers analysis (losing 3 or more on a single end), the principle seems to be inculcating into the thinking of all the rinks.

In the final all fours rinks won less Ends each than Ocean Grove for the game. Two sides were 12/13 and the other two were 10/15 Ends comparison. Overall that's 44 Ends for Highton and 12 more for Ocean Grove with 56 Ends. In most matches over the years that ratio alone would have won the game for the side with the 56 Ends.

It didn't however in this game. Whether consciously or not the Clangers principles pushed during the season have assisted Highton win the game.

It comes down to two things a lot of good Bowls by each player in the rink and a risk averse strategy in shot selection.

These as the basic stats for the game:-

Rink 1. Ends 12/13, Clangers 1 for 5 shots lost, opposition Clangers 3 for 14 shots, result WIN 25/22

Rink 2. Ends 10/15, Clangers 1 for 3 shots lost, opposition Clangers 3 for 11 shots, result WIN 22/19

Rink 3. Ends 12/13, Clangers 2 for 7 shots lost, opposition Clangers 5 for 22 shots, results WIN 29/23

Rink 4. Ends 10/15, Clangers 3 for 15 shots lost, opposition Clangers 3 for 12 shots, results LOSS 25/22. Margin at 15th end 14/22 but got the difference back to tie with 1 end to play - GAME OVER.

The game was won primarily with great Bowls and high levels of focus and concentration. But underlying that was the principles the coaches have been pushing to minimise the Clangers to ensure the game never gets away from us at any stage.

    Bowls Victoria Heads Up

On 23 March BV published their weekly “Heads Up” (we get it via e-mail, I presume BV send it to out via a bulk e-mail mail-out to registered Vic. bowlers)   In Heads-up there is an article titled “State of pennant stories & flag winners from around the State”  if you click on that article it tells the pennant stories of 12 different Victorian Clubs and Highton is included as one of those 12 clubs.

    Highton – Our season story

Highton Bowls Club participates in the Geelong Bowls Region Pennant competition.  We are a typical bowls club (volunteers, not for profit, community based club – no gaming machines).

Our club consists of a total membership of approximately 450 members (which includes 250 bowling members plus 150 social members, plus approximately 50 other members of assorted membership categories).

Highton BC has a strong reliance on the goodwill of our many volunteer members to keep the club functioning smoothly.

We are a competitive club, a well managed club, a proud club, and we strive to be a progressive, friendly and harmonious club.

We have a strong bowling and training culture and we also enjoy an active social program with many great entertainment nights.

We are particularly pleased with the performance of our pennant teams in this 2017-18 Pennant season for achieving the following results:

Saturday Pennant: We entered 7 Divisions in the 2017-2018 GBR Sat. Pennant competition and all seven Divisions secured a top four finish thus qualifying for the GBR finals series, results being: Div. 1 Highton 1 = finished 1st on the final ladder, Div. 1 Highton 2 = finished 4th on the final ladder, Div. 3 Highton 3 = finished 4th on final ladder, Div. 5 Highton 4 = finished 3rd on final ladder, Div. 8 Highton 5 = finished 1st on final ladder, Div. 9 Highton 6 = finished 1st on final ladder, Div.11 Highton 7 = finished 2nd on the final ladder. A strong outcome

Midweek Pennant:  The Highton BC had 5 Divisions entered in the 2017-2018 GBR Mid-week Pennant season – our most successful Division was the Div. 1 Mid-Week team (Highton 1) – which finished 4th on the 2017-18 final ladder. We are particularly pleased with that because it’s the sixth consecutive year that our Midweek Div. 1 (Highton 1) team has achieved an end of season top 4 finish thus qualifying for the GBR Div. 1 Midweek finals for the sixth consecutive year.

Highton BC Managing Director Mr John Jackson said: “I am delighted with the results of our Pennant teams this year, all seven Saturday Divisions have worked hard and have now been rewarded with a position in the finals and the Midweek team has once again managed to carry over its good form from one year into the following year. It's a credit to the club, the coaches, and the bowlers.”

    Ladies 5 a Side Competition

This week saw the first day of the annual 5-aside competition held at Highton Bowls Club. The competition is in it's fourth year. Organised by Elaine Coles and her merry band, Tuesday saw 80 bowlers from 11 different clubs compete in the 5-aside challenge. All three greens were in play, with competitors enjoying good competition and fellowship. The competition which runs for 4 consecutive weeks has become very popular, the return of many competitors from previous years is a testament to the enjoyment had by all participants.
