It all started with a meeting of the Highton Progress Association on 13th September 1958 where they resolved that a bowling club be formed. Three years were needed to create a green of the required standard. Highton Bowls Club had its official opening on 30 September 1961. The first clubhouse was built on the southern (Roslyn Road) side of the what is now our lower green and opened the following year in September 1962.
Our present clubhouse was opened in September 1991.
We have around 500 club members comprising 350 bowlers and 150 social members. Come and join us, new members and visitors are always welcome.
Our primary objective is to provide bowls activities as both social and competitive events. These take place as regular social matches, mens, ladies and mixed, as well as Midweek (Tuesday) or Weekend (Saturday) pennant within the Geelong Bowls Region competition, or Club Championship events.
The development of bowlers is carried out by a dedicated group of coaches, currently lead by Dan Priddle. These people have all put in a lot of their own time to learn extra about the game of bowls and the skills involved. They have all been trained in the techniques to enable them to convey their knowledge of the skills of the game to many of the Highton players both new and older bowlers.
The clubhouse bar is open for social drinks most days from 4:00 to about 7:00 pm. Every Friday evening weekly raffles and the weekly membership draw are held.
Bistro style meals are available on Fridays between 5:00 and 8:00pm. A menu with a variety of mains and desserts allows your choice of quality meals as well as a weekly special. Kids menu for 12 years under is also available.
Day to day management to maintain our busy timetable of events and club administration is conducted on a voluntary basis by many members in teams, on committees or as individuals.
The club has three outdoor greens, two grass and one synthetic. The synthetic surfaced green, known as the 'Founder's Green' is in front of our clubhouse and is also equipped with lighting to allow play in all seasons both day and night.
Beneath the clubhouse is a four rink carpeted green. It is used throughout the year for coaching, practice and is heated for regular matches during the colder months of the year.
Our large clubhouse or function room is capable of seating more than 160 members, players or guests. A commercial quality kitchen is used by our members or our in-house caterer for club event meals, regular Friday night Bistro dinners or food at various functions. Refreshments are available at reasonable prices from our well stocked bar. A gas BBQ is also available.
